about

This is a live recording of my senior recital, which took place on March 16th, 2013.

It's free to download! (Just click 'Buy' and put $0 as the price) But if you'd like to leave a 'tip,' that's acceptable as well.

See the video from the recital here! www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKSFngArucs&list=PLjQ3p-j6ugn02tfzh6xbhmyeQuKH_aVN_&index=1

~ * ~

Most of the titles of these pieces were decided when the bulk of the material had already been written. Ergo, they generally don’t represent a premeditated attempt to score a specific idea, but instead an afterthought attempt to summarize the moods, colors, and scenes portrayed by the music. Often, though, the title will then inform that last bit of writing that wraps up the piece. The music is still essentially abstract; the title is merely a starting point to let the audience’s imaginations draw their own stories directly from the sounds they hear.

For those interested, some of my favorite and most inspirational composers have included: Igor Stravinsky; Maurice Ravel; John Adams; Steve Reich; John Cage; Richard Wagner; Carlo Gesualdo; Giacinto Scelsi; Béla Bartók; György Ligeti; Ludwig van Beethoven; Nobuo Uematsu; Danny Baranowsky; and Martin Stig Andersen.

A Very Brief List of “Thank You”s

Thank you to all of the performers for their hard work and devotion to this music. Without them, this music would just be ideas in my head, pixels on a screen, ink on a page, or at best a horrendously lifeless Sibelius MIDI playback file. Special thanks to Nicole Parise, Madeline Slettedahl, and Cherilyn Reimers for their generous performances on multiple pieces tonight. Thanks to Christian Casolary, Derek Cheney, Kramer Elwell, Coltan Foster, and Matt Pollock for their special performances tonight. Thanks to Leif Mitchell for saving us. Thank you to my friends in the music department and at Tuggyloop for keeping me sane. Thank you to Bruce Hamilton for introducing me to new music and new ways of thinking about and writing music. Thank you to Roger Briggs for teaching me practically everything I know about writing music and for always pushing me to be better. Thanks to Lesley Sommer for training my ears and for leading the music department through the past few years. Thank you to Christopher Bianco for believing in my abilities and teaching me to wave my arms in front of performers. Thank you to Elie Hartman, for always being there for me. Thank you to my parents for encouraging me to pursue my dreams. Thank you to everyone I’m sure I forgot and failed to mention for being the unsung heroes. Thanks to Josh Shade for recording audio and Matt Eschbach for recording video. Thanks to Victoria Cooley for taking the 'album cover' picture.
